If an assignment says word count (字数), is that characters or words?
In Chinese coursework, journals, and social posts, 字数 usually means the number of Chinese characters (Hanzi), not segmented words. Use Chinese characters on this page. Count 词 only if the brief asks for word tokens.
What if the result differs from Microsoft Word?
Word’s Words count splits on spaces, so continuous Chinese will not match this page’s total words. To align with Word’s East Asian character statistic, use Chinese characters. To align with characters excluding spaces, use Characters.
