FAQ

Does the online word count update in real time?

Yes. The Chinese Word Counter refreshes every result as you add or remove content.

What can the Chinese Word Counter count?

It counts total words, total characters, Chinese characters (Hanzi), English words, punctuation, numbers, bytes, lines, paragraphs, and estimated reading time.

If an assignment says word count (字数), is that characters or words?

In Chinese coursework, journals, and social posts, 字数 usually means the number of Chinese characters (Hanzi), not segmented words. Use Chinese characters on this page. Count 词 only if the brief asks for word tokens.

What if the result differs from Microsoft Word?

Word’s Words count splits on spaces, so continuous Chinese will not match this page’s total words. To align with Word’s East Asian character statistic, use Chinese characters. To align with characters excluding spaces, use Characters.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.

How are Chinese characters and English words counted separately?

Chinese text is counted per character, English per word, numbers per consecutive digit group, and punctuation separately. Total words = Chinese characters + English words + numbers.

How are paragraphs detected?

A run of non-empty lines forms one paragraph, separated by blank lines; line count follows newline characters.
