This page is useful when homework, quizzes, a midterm, labs, and a final do not count equally. A 25% midterm should move the average more than a 10% lab, and a 30% final should be treated as unfinished weight rather than as a fifth score in an unweighted mean. Results are mathematical estimates only. They do not apply a school’s rounding, extra-credit caps, dropped scores, curve, or pass/fail rules.
What is a grade calculator?
A grade calculator converts a list of scored categories into one number on a 0–100 (or extra-credit) scale. At minimum it needs a score and a weight for each completed category. A useful final grade calculator also tells you what remaining weight is still open and what score that remainder must earn for a chosen overall target.
Yaya Tools’ grade calculator is built for those everyday course checks:

It does not store a gradebook, drop the lowest quiz, apply letter-grade cutoffs, or convert percentages into GPA. For credit-weighted GPA across several courses, use the GPA calculator. For a raw ratio such as “what percent is 22 of 25,” use the percentage calculator.
Because processing stays local, you can try “what if this quiz were 95?” without creating an account. Closing the tab clears the inputs. The site does not keep a history of scores you typed.
How to use this grade calculator
The workflow is short so you can answer “what is my grade?” and “what do I need on the final?” in one pass.
- Open the grade calculator on Yaya Tools.
- For each completed category, enter a score (%) and a weight (%). Names are optional. Add or remove rows as needed.
- Set the desired overall (%). The default example uses
90. - Read current weighted grade, weight entered, remaining weight, weighted contribution, and score needed on remaining work.
- Click Reset examples if you want the sample categories back.
Results refresh when inputs change. Empty rows are skipped. If a score or weight is missing, non-numeric, out of range, or the weights sum to more than 100%, the tool shows a validation message until the row is fixed.
Privacy note: categories and scores are calculated only in your current browser. Nothing is sent to a Yaya Tools server by this page.
Tip: leave the final exam out of the table until it is scored. The remaining weight is then the unfinished share of the course, which is what the “needed” formula uses.
Weighted grade formula
A course grade on this page is a weighted mean. NIST Dataplot states the same structure: the weighted mean is the sum of each observation times its weight, divided by the sum of the weights. [1] OpenStax Principles of Finance 2e describes the classroom-adjacent procedure: multiply each value by its weight, add those products, then divide by the total of the weights. [2]
Current weighted grade = Σ(scoreᵢ × weightᵢ) ÷ Σ(weightᵢ)
Weights here are percentages of the course (20 means 20%). Scores are percentages on that category (88 means 88%). The weighted contribution shown on the page is:
Weighted contribution = Σ(scoreᵢ × weightᵢ) ÷ 100
If entered weights already add to 100%, the current weighted grade is the overall course grade, and remaining work is not estimated. If they add to less than 100%, remaining weight is 100 − entered weight, and the overall course grade after remaining work is:
Overall = (current × entered weight + remaining score × remaining weight) ÷ 100
Solve for the unknown remaining score when you want a desired overall grade D:
Needed = (D × 100 − Σ(scoreᵢ × weightᵢ)) ÷ remaining weight
That is the what grade do I need on my final formula when the unfinished share is the final (or any other leftover categories treated as one remainder).
Scores may be above 100 when a category includes extra credit. Needed may also exceed 100; that means the target is not reachable on a 0–100 remaining exam unless extra credit exists. Needed at or below 0 means the target is already met even if remaining work scores 0.
The calculator does not renormalize weights to 100% behind your back. A 70% completed course is averaged over 70, not stretched as if those four categories were the whole class. That matches how most syllabi accumulate points: unfinished weight is still open.
Worked example (tool defaults)
The page’s sample categories are:

Current weighted grade:
6,040 ÷ 70 = 86.2857… → displayed as 86.29%
Remaining weight is 30%. With a desired overall of 90%:
Needed = (90 × 100 − 6,040) ÷ 30
= (9,000 − 6,040) ÷ 30
= 2,960 ÷ 30
= 98.666… → displayed as 98.67%
Interpretation: on the work already graded (70% of the course), you sit near 86.29%. To finish at 90% overall, the leftover 30% has to come in around 98.67%. That is reachable only if remaining work can still score that high. A 100% remaining score would produce:
Overall = (86.2857… × 70 + 100 × 30) ÷ 100 ≈ 90.40%
A 95% remaining score would produce about 88.90% overall. If the syllabus caps remaining work at 100% with no extra credit, a 92% course target is already out of reach on these inputs:
Needed for 92% = (9,200 − 6,040) ÷ 30 = 105.33%
The page flags that case as over 100% needed.
If you only wanted the mean of the four scores without weights, you would get (88 + 92 + 78 + 95) ÷ 4 = 88.25%. That unweighted figure is the wrong course grade here because the midterm (25%) counts more than labs (10%). The average calculator is the right tool when every value should count equally; this page is the right tool when the syllabus publishes category percentages.
Scope, rounding, and school rules
Use this calculator for planning and for checking hand math against a syllabus. Do not treat the output as an official transcript line.
What the page does:

What the page does not do:
- Letter grades (A−, B+) or GPA conversion
- Dropping the lowest quiz, replacing a midterm, or excused zeros
- Curves, rounding to the nearest percent, or “87.5 rounds to A−” policies
- Separate remaining categories (it treats leftover weight as one unfinished block)
- Attendance, participation rubrics, or late penalties unless you bake them into the scores you enter
If your instructor publishes a points syllabus (for example 450 of 600 points so far), convert to percentages first: score = points earned ÷ points possible × 100, and weight = points possible ÷ course total × 100. Different schools publish different cutoffs. A “90% for an A” goal is a target you type, not a universal rule. Confirm the syllabus, the LMS gradebook, and any extra-credit policy before you change how you study.
Common mistakes
Averaging category scores without weights
Four scores of 88, 92, 78, and 95 do not mean 88.25% in the course if the weights are 20, 15, 25, and 10.Putting the final in the table before it is graded

All grade math on this page runs in your current browser session. Category names, scores, and weights are not uploaded to Yaya Tools for processing or storage. That local-only design suits shared computers and quick what-if edits, though browser autofill, history, and extensions on a shared device can still expose typed values. Clear the page or reset when you are done if others use the same machine.
