How to use the pace calculator
- Choose whether to calculate pace, finish time, or distance.
- Select kilometers or miles. Keep every input in that same unit.
- For pace, enter distance and elapsed time. For finish time, enter distance and pace in decimal minutes per unit (for example,
6.5means 6:30). For distance, enter time and pace. - Read the primary result plus the equivalent pace and speed in the other unit system.
The default example is 5 km in 30 minutes: it returns a pace of 6:00/km, a speed of 10 km/h, and an equivalent pace of about 9:39/mile. Need to convert a route distance first? Pace calculator formula
Let distance be D in the selected unit and elapsed time be T in seconds.
Pace in seconds per unit = T ÷ D
Finish time in seconds = D × pace
Distance = T ÷ pace
Speed in units per hour = D ÷ (T ÷ 3,600)
To convert a pace, the calculator uses the exact conversion 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers. A kilometer pace converts to minutes per mile by multiplying seconds per kilometer by 1.609344; a mile pace converts to minutes per kilometer by dividing by 1.609344.
Worked examples
Estimate a 10K finish time
At 5:30 per kilometer, enter distance 10, unit kilometers, choose Finish time, and enter pace 5.5. The result is 55:00. This assumes you sustain the same average pace over the whole distance.
Find a walking pace
If a walk covers 3 miles in 54 minutes, choose Pace, enter distance 3, hours 0, minutes 54, and unit miles. The result is 18:00/mile, or about 11:11/km.
Convert a ride into distance
For 1:15:00 at 3.75 minutes per kilometer, choose Distance. The calculator returns 20 km and 16 km/h. This is arithmetic, not a prediction of outdoor conditions.
Scope and limits
This tool calculates averages; it does not use GPS tracks, elevation, heart rate, weather, training plans, or medical data. A steady-pace estimate can differ from a real event because hills, stops, surface, fatigue, and conditions change. Decimal pace inputs are decimal minutes, not minutes:seconds: enter 6.5 for 6:30, not 6.30. For race pacing or exercise changes, choose a plan appropriate to your own goals and health needs.

Cross-unit results use the exact international conversion 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers, documented in the NIST Guide to the SI conversion factors. Displayed results are rounded, while calculations retain the unrounded conversion.
