Start with a consistent savings scenario

Use the same currency for the starting balance, target, and monthly contribution. The tool does not convert currencies; it applies the same arithmetic to whichever unit you choose. Enter the annual rate as a percent, so 4.5 means 4.5% per year. The page then uses a monthly rate of annual rate ÷ 12.

For example, a 1,000 starting balance, 10,000 goal, 300 monthly contribution, and 4.5% annual rate form one fixed scenario. The calculator rounds the duration up to the first whole month whose modeled balance reaches the goal. That keeps the answer useful for a monthly deposit habit rather than suggesting an impossible fraction of a deposit month.

How long will this monthly amount take?

Choose Time needed from my monthly contribution when you know what you can consistently set aside. The page models the starting amount growing at the fixed monthly rate, adds the contribution at month-end, and finds the first month at or above the target.

How much should I save each month?

Choose Monthly contribution for my target time when the deadline is clearer than the monthly amount. Enter a whole number of months, and the calculator rearranges the same future-value formula to solve for the contribution needed at each month-end.

The answer is not a bank instruction or a guaranteed plan. It is a fixed-rate estimate. Know the boundary of a fixed-rate model

The calculator assumes a constant stated annual rate, monthly compounding, and deposits at the end of each month. It excludes fees, taxes, inflation, withdrawals, changing APYs, minimum-balance rules, deposit timing differences, and investment losses. A savings account or investment product can credit interest differently from this simplified monthly model.

That distinction matters especially when a goal is important or time-sensitive. Use an account's current disclosure and statement for its actual rate and rules. Keep savings and borrowing calculations separate

Is a higher annual rate always enough to reach the goal faster?

Not necessarily. A higher fixed rate increases the estimate, but the outcome also depends on your starting balance, contribution amount, time, fees, and whether the rate actually remains available. Regular deposits often remain the more controllable input.

Why does the tool show a little more than my target?

The time-to-goal result is evaluated in whole months. The page reports the first monthly endpoint that meets or exceeds the target, so the modeled ending balance can be slightly higher than the goal.

On this page
