A ratio is a compact way to preserve a relationship while the actual quantities change. It can describe ingredients in a recipe, pixels in an image, or an unequal split of a known total. Start with the right meaning of a : b
The notation a : b says that every a equal units of the first quantity correspond to b equal units of the second. For 2 : 3, the first quantity divided by the second is 2/3. But if you are splitting one total into that ratio, the whole contains 2 + 3 = 5 parts: the first recipient gets 2/5, or 40%, and the second gets 3/5, or 60%.
That distinction prevents a common error: 2 : 3 is not a 2%-to-3% split and it is not “one unit apart.” It is a multiplicative relationship. The UK government’s mathematics curriculum guidance explicitly includes ratio notation, simplifying ratios, and dividing quantities into unequal parts as ratio-and-proportion skills.

Simplify ratios before comparing them
To simplify 24 : 36, divide both terms by their greatest common divisor, 12:
24 : 36 = (24 ÷ 12) : (36 ÷ 12) = 2 : 3
The same rule works with terminating decimals after making the units whole. 1.2 : 1.8 becomes 12 : 18, then 2 : 3. The tool handles that conversion for up to ten decimal places. It deliberately asks for positive values and does not pretend that a long decimal from an imprecise measurement is exact.
Make units consistent first. A 2-foot by 36-inch comparison is 24 inches : 36 inches, or 2 : 3; entering 2 : 36 directly gives the wrong relationship. The US unit converter can normalize common length, weight, temperature, and volume units before you reduce a ratio.
Scale a relationship with an equivalent ratio
Equivalent ratios multiply or divide both terms by the same non-zero factor. In an equation a : b = c : d, the cross-products must match:
a × d = b × c
For 2 : 3 = 10 : ?, the first term changed by a factor of 5, so the unknown must be 3 × 5 = 15. The Ratio Calculator asks you to leave one box blank, then displays the completed equation so you can check that the result still has the same relationship.
This reasoning belongs only to direct proportion. A rideshare fare with a base fee plus a per-mile fee is not a single direct ratio. Likewise, a bulk discount that starts only after a threshold changes the relationship. In those cases, use the actual formula or policy rather than forcing a ratio.
Split a total without losing a part
To divide a total T in an a : b ratio, calculate the number of parts and then each share:
first share = T × a ÷ (a + b)
second share = T × b ÷ (a + b)
For 500 units split 2:3, there are five parts. The first share is 500 × 2 ÷ 5 = 200; the second is 500 × 3 ÷ 5 = 300. Together they return to 500. The tool also displays 40% and 60%, which is a useful check but not a substitute for knowing which total you are splitting.
When the total represents indivisible objects, the mathematical answer may contain a fraction. Seven identical tickets split 2:3 produce 2.8 and 4.2 tickets—an instruction to choose a rounding or allocation rule, not a result a calculator can finalize. A quick check before trusting the output
Ask four questions:
- Are both quantities measured in the same unit?
- Is the situation truly proportional, with no fixed fee or changing rule?
- Did you preserve the order of the terms?
- If splitting a total, do the displayed shares add back to that total?
Ratios make the arithmetic visible; they do not determine whether the underlying inputs are fair, permitted, safe, or complete. Treat a browser result as an auditable number check, then apply the context that the formula cannot see.

Can I use it for money?
It can calculate a mathematical split, but it does not apply currency rounding, tax, fees, contractual terms, or legal allocation rules. Confirm those independently.
Why is 2:3 not the same as 2/5?
2:3 compares the two parts. When those are the only parts of one whole, their total is five parts, so the first share is 2/5 of that whole.
