Before pricing a small patio, footing, or pier, it helps to translate dimensions into the volume a supplier or bag label uses. It is a material-planning aid, not a structural design or order confirmation.
Start with the finished volume
For a rectangular slab, convert thickness to feet first, then multiply the three dimensions:
volume in cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × thickness (ft)
A 12 ft by 10 ft slab that is 4 inches thick has a 40 ft³ base volume:
12 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 40 ft³
Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. In this example, 40 ÷ 27 = 1.48 yd³ before allowance. The conversion is exact because a yard is three feet in each dimension: 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. Add an allowance transparently
An allowance is simply a percentage added after calculating the base shape:
total volume = base volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
With a 10% allowance, the 40 ft³ slab becomes 44 ft³, or about 1.63 yd³. The calculator keeps the base and adjusted values separate so you can see exactly what the allowance changes.
There is no universal waste percentage. A level rectangular form and an irregular excavation do not carry the same uncertainty. Treat the setting as a planning input, then confirm measurement, local practice, and supplier minimums before placing an order.
Translate volume into bags
For a small job, ready-mix bags are often more practical than a bulk delivery. Divide the adjusted volume by the yield stated for the exact bag, then round up to a whole bag. With the calculator’s nominal 0.60 ft³ 80 lb example:
44 ft³ ÷ 0.60 ft³ per bag = 73.33...
rounded up = 74 bags
Bag yield is not a substitute for reading the package. Product mix, moisture, placement, and the manufacturer’s stated yield matter. The calculator deliberately labels its bag yields as estimates and lets you select among the common nominal sizes.

Use the result within its limits
Geometry does not choose concrete strength, reinforcement, thickness, drainage, forms, permits, or safe construction method.
