Completed years answer “How old is this person?” Calendar years, months, and days describe an interval, while total days provide an exact elapsed-day count. These measures use different units and should not be converted with a fixed number of days per year.

How Completed Age Is Calculated
The calculator uses completed age: a person is age 0 on the birth date and becomes one year older on each birthday.
For someone born on October 20, 2000:
- On October 19, 2026, the completed age is still 25
- On October 20, 2026, the completed age becomes 26
- On October 20, 2027, it becomes 27
The tool first checks whether the birthday in the target year has occurred. It then calculates complete calendar months and the remaining days. It does not assume that every year contains exactly 365 days.
Completed Age Is Not a Traditional Nominal-Age System
Traditional nominal-age systems may count a person as one at birth or increase age on a shared calendar date. This tool does not calculate those systems or apply regional traditions. For school eligibility, retirement, identity documents, or other legal decisions, use the rules issued by the relevant authority.
Why Total Days Cannot Be Age Times 365
Calendar months contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, and leap years add February 29. Two people with the same completed age can therefore have different elapsed-day totals.
The tool calculates the difference between calendar-date boundaries using UTC dates, avoiding a one-hour daylight-saving transition from changing the day count:
Total days = target date − birth date
The birth date itself is excluded. Equal dates produce 0 elapsed days; the following date produces 1 day.

How Is a February 29 Birthday Handled?
The calculator applies a specific rule for leap-day births: in a non-leap year, it treats the birthday as February 28.

On February 28, 2025, completed age becomes 1. The page then points to February 28, 2026 as the next birthday because its “next birthday” result must be strictly later than the target date.

How to Interpret Days Until the Next Birthday
The page chooses the nearest birthday strictly after the target date. When the target date is the birthday itself, the result does not say 0 days; it calculates the interval to the birthday in the following year.
That behavior answers “How long until the next birthday?” To determine whether the target date is a birthday, compare its month and day with the birth date rather than relying only on the countdown field.
